A name alone does not describe every feature. Check the exact inverter, battery and wiring proposed for the site.
What makes a roof suitable?
Usable area matters more than the roof’s total area. Shade, access paths, water tanks, drainage and other equipment can reduce the space available. Roof strength, waterproofing and mounting need a technical review appropriate to the property.
Confirm ownership and installation permissions before progressing. A shared building may need decisions about the roof, meter, costs and responsibilities before equipment can be selected.
How should you compare solar quotes?
Compare the same capacity and scope. Ask each proposal to identify:
- Panel and inverter models, quantities and proposed capacity.
- Mounting structure, electrical protections, cabling and earthing.
- Battery capacity and supported loads if backup is included.
- Structural or civil work and any exclusions.
- Approvals, metering, installation and commissioning responsibilities.
- Taxes, payment stages, quote validity and cancellation terms.
- Manufacturer warranties, workmanship cover and service contacts.
Ask what could change after assessment. A clear proposal explains both the included work and the conditions that may require a revision.
What determines generation and savings?
Weather, shade, orientation, equipment condition and maintenance affect generation. Electricity use, tariffs, approved export arrangements and project cost affect the financial outcome.
Ask for the assumptions behind any projection, including whether it uses typical or ideal conditions. Avoid comparing a guaranteed-sounding percentage from one advert with a different site’s estimated result.
What should you know about batteries?
List the loads you need during an outage and how long they need to run. Supporting lights and essential appliances is different from backing up all air conditioning and large motors.
Review battery compatibility, usable capacity, location, protection, warranty and replacement considerations. Storage requires a suitable design and safe installation, not just adding a battery to any existing system.
What happens after installation?
Keep the accepted scope, equipment details, test and commissioning records, operating instructions and warranty documents. Understand how to read monitoring information if monitoring is included.
Agree cleaning and inspection responsibilities. Ask which visits, repairs and parts an annual maintenance contract covers. Do not open or alter electrical equipment yourself.
